SAGALEE, Apr 14: Responding to the call for joining the Arunachal Airgun Surrender Abhiyaan (AASA), at least 17 people from different villages of Sagalee AC today surrendered their airguns in presence of Environment & Forest Minister Mama Natung and MLA-cum-former Chief Minister Nabam Tuki.
Appreciating the response, Natung requested them to convince all others still possessing airguns to surrender their hunting tools for the sake of protecting the state’s wildlife. “It is our responsibility to preserve and promote the state’s wildlife. We are still unaware of the potentiality of wildlife in generating self-employment and also the enormous negative impact created due to ecological imbalance,” he said while appealing to the youths to conduct research on the wide variants of flora and fauna and thereby put the outcomes on global platforms. “Our ancestors have been living with nature and its components while maintaining ecological balance. It’s the correct time to revive them for greater protection of plants and animals and surrendering of airguns is the needed step,” he added.
Natung, who also holds the Sports & Youth Affairs portfolio appealed to the parents to involve their children in sports activity. Youths from the state have great in-born qualities of sportspersons and the only challenge is to nourish them and guard from the menace of drug abuse, he said. Earlier, the Sports Minister facilitated four national-level sportspersons from Karoi village under Lebia panchayat. Responding to a memorandum submitted by the villagers, Natung assured to pursue the construction of the Micro Irrigation Project (MIP) in the nearby village as a top priority.Speaking on the occasion, Tuki appealed to the youths to study more about the state’s flora and fauna and explore the potentialities it carries for generating self-employment opportunities. “We have enough varieties of food and meat to live and sustain. Therefore, people should voluntarily surrender their airguns and support the mission to protect the state’s wild animals,” he emphasised. The ex-CM also requested the people of his constituency to allow execution of development projects in the area within schedule instead of fighting for personal gains.
Adviser to Environment & Forest Minister, Kumsi Sidisow also made the appeal to join the surrender drive for the cause of sustenance of the state’s flora and fauna. Earlier on the day, Natung laid the foundation stone for creation of the new ‘Bumbum’ village coming up under Sagalee AC.
Among others, WRD Chief Engineer (Western-Zone) Getam Borang, Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (PCCF) RK Singh and HoDs were present on the occasion.
