PASIGHAT, Nov 27: The news of possible diversion of Siang River by China in Tibet question of which was raised by Lok Sabha MP Ninong Ering has spread like wildfire across the inhabitants settled in the Siang and Brahmaputra Valleys.
Lodging a protest rally against the Chinese Government’s possible diversion of Siang River, the local student union, All Bogong Students’ Union (E) today marched from the town’s main market to the Deputy Commissioner’s office and submitted a petition addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking urgent intervention in the issue.
With slogans like ‘Chinese Government Hai Hai’, ‘Stop Diversion of Siang River’, ‘Siang River is our lifeline’ etc. the union’s President, Lungkang Ering and Legal Adviser, Advocate Mary Tatak called the river the identity of the Adis.
‘We are deeply worried over China’s move which has reportedly constructed huge dams on the same river,’ said ABSU (E)’s General Secretary, Talin Nonang while appealing student bodies and organizations to come forward in the protest to save the Siang River.
Earlier today, DC TamiyoTatak held an emergency meeting on the subject in his office which was also attended by MP, Ninong Ering, former Cabinet Minister, Bosiram Siram, EE (WRD) Er. Tamo Jamoh and EE (PHED) Er. Bimal Welly etc.
Tatak directed the EEs of WRD and PHED for constant vigil and hourly report on the Siang.
According to PHED’s Siang River water testing report, NTU (Naphelometric Turbidity Unit) is 425 and is found to be very high and if exposed for a long period may affect aquatic lives including eggs/larva.
Meanwhile talking to media persons this morning from the river bank this morning again, Ering reiterated the demand and appealed for early check and monitoring of the work going on in the Chinese side.
“Chinese are likely to use the Dams and Tunnel built in China as weapon to destroy downstream North-East of India including Bangladesh, as it would be more destructive than a nuclear weapon,” cautioned Ering while urging for a consensus pressure of international bodies on China to stop building such projects which would cause destruction to other downstream communities.
