TAWANG, Aug 26: A one-day legal awareness programme on “Monpa Customary Marriage System and Its Importance” was organised today by the District Legal Sevices Authority in collaboration with Women’s Welfare Association and Humans Right First Tawang at Zomkhang Hall.
Topics like Monpa Customary Law of Marriage, other ways of marriage, ways and means to legalise marriage, etc. were explained by the JMFC cum Secretary DLSA Tawang. He said that in order to get one’s relationship recognised and bring security in marriage, it is important that one gets married either through the customary system or court marriage.
He also explained about maintenance under Sec 125 Cr Pc, Punishment for Bigamy under 494 IPC, Protection under Domestic Violence Act 2015, Property Rights of Women and Children, etc.
ADC Lobsang Tsering and Chairman, Mon Mimang Tsokpa, Rinchen Dorjee also dwelt at length on ways and means of solemnising marriages under Monpa custom through rituals like Krimchang, Yerchang, Tikchang, etc and highlighted on steps in settlings cases of marital discord. Various Institutional mechanisms were also explained. Further, the importance of Panchasheel and five precepts under Buddhism was also reflected upon.
Chairman, Women Welfare Society Tawang, Yangchen Lhamu, wife of Tawang MLA, Nima Drema, President Human Rights First advocate Pema Chowang and Asst. Professor, DK Govt College Dr Sange Tsomo also spoke on the occasion.
