TEZU, Apr 14: A former labourer who had been compelled to lead the life of a destitute for more than three years following a loss of vision caused by an accidental electric shock has regained sight after a successful cataract operation here at the Zonal General Hospital.
Working as a labourer in Tamlanagar, Mohan Tati lost his vision after receiving an accidental electric shock during mason work. The incident dragged the 25-year old man into deep misery and poverty, ending all his hopes of regaining vision. Narrating his tale of distress, Mohan said it was after the electric shock he lost his eye sight completely and as his family could not afford the medical expenses, he never had the courage to visit Tinsukia or Dibrugarh for treatment. “Those were the painful days. Right from early morning to night, I remained under the grip of frustration and sometimes even thought of killing myself, but didn’t have the courage,” Mohan said.
“Fortunately, one day our GB Soloi Ngadong advised me to visit the free eye operation camp scheduled on April 7-9 at Zonal General Hospital, Tezu. I still couldn’t believe that a simple operation could give back my lost vision and it’s a new lease of life for me. I extend my deepest gratitude to the GB who motivated me and my family to visit the camp attended by a team of specialist eye surgeons including Dr C Tayang and Dr Taba Khanna,” Mohan narrated.
Eye Surgeon of the District GH Dr C Tayang informed that Mohan was suffering from developmental cataract. “Cataract is mostly an old-age complicacy, but it could occur even to children and diabetic patients and in some accident cases also. Although it can be cured through a simple operation, most of the patients despite complications don’t turn up for treatment out of fear or blind faith. We have a well-developed operation system and the patients should avail its optimum benefit,” Dr Tayang informed.
