ITANAGAR, Mar 5 : Hundreds of indigenous people belonging to various tribes from different districts of the state today joined the mass rally organized by the Tribal Identity Movement (TIM) demanding immediate implementation Arunachal Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act 1978.
Holding placards, banners and dressed in local attire the rally started from RK Mission Hospital Helipad ground and culminated at IG Park Itanagar.
Addressing the gathering, Member TIM, Debaang Tayeng elaborated the importance of implementation of Arunachal Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act 1978 in the state. The Act provides prohibition of conversion from one religious faith to any other religious faith by use of force or inducement or by fraudulent means and for matters connected therewith, he stated while quoting the said Act.
"We are not demanding the Act to persecute other religions or faith but to protect our own culture and tradition which is on the verge of extinction," he stated. Terming loss of culture as loss of identity, Debaang urged the people to follow their own age-old culture and tradition and not to believe in hearsay for the sake of any kind of benefits.
Speaking on the occasion, senior citizen Bengia Agung also urged the gathering to follow their own culture and customs. "We are not against anyone; everyone is free to follow any religion or culture but we also want others not to dilute our tribal culture and tradition," he added.
