Main accused in minor rape, murder case arrested

NAHARLAGUN, Aug 24: The main accused in the suspected rape, abduction and murder of the 7-year old minor girl in Simalguri area near Chessa bordering Assam, who was on the run for last five days, has been arrested from Rajghar area of Simulguri by a police team from Bihpuria Police Station, Assam, on Thursday, police said today.

"After a rigorous search operation, the Assam Police arrested one Arjun Dutta, 22 in connection with the murder of the 7-year minor girl whose body was found in mysterious condition along Rajghar road in Simalguri area of Assam on August 19 morning,” informed SDPO, Naharlagun, Make Bui.

SDPO Bui and Banderdewa OC K Yangfo who were coordinating the case confirmed the arrest on Friday and informed that the main accused is presently kept under custody in Bihpuria Police Station. A few more suspects were also detained in this connection.

The SDPO informed that they have been cooperating and sharing information with Bihpuria Police of North Lakhimpur district which finally led to the arrest of the main accused on Thursdayafternoon.

“The situation in the area is under control and peace returned to the area. Security has been beefed up on both sides of the boundary to thwart any eventualities,” the SDPO further added.

The accused was booked under relevant sections of the IPC and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
