ITANAGAR, Jun 26: Joining the rest of the nation and world, Arunachal Pradesh today observed the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking with the reaffirmation to keep alive its fight against the menace of drugs. ‘Share Facts on Drugs, Save Lives’was this year’s theme.
Capital police observed the day at various locations in the ICR through awareness marches, blood donation and other activities. An awareness video on drug abuse with the theme 'Sharing Facts, Saves Life' was also launched.
“Following the directives of the Chief Minister, Home Minister and the DGP to make Arunachal Pradesh a drugs-free state, Capital Police has already launched a war against the menace. In 2021, at least 24 cases have been registered with the arrest of 52 people in the ICR, including a few police personnel,” SDPO, Itanagar Kamdam Sikom informed, appealing to the denizens, particularly youths, to do away with drug abuse and join the mainstream.
In West Siang headquarters Aalo, NGO Mothers’ Vision observed the day through an awareness bike rally with the ‘No to Drugs’ message from its Drug Recovery Club up to Kamba General Ground in which 30 ex-drug addicts participated. The rally was joined by Kamba Bango Sports Association (KBSA) and Kamba Women Welfare Association (KWWA) and stopped at several strategic public places to deliver technical inputs on drug abuse and illicit trafficking. The NGO’s Chairperson and ZPM Yomcha Jumde Yomgam Gamlin called for a collective approach to fight the menace.
Aalo Police in collaboration with the Home Department also celebrated the day.
In Lower Subansiri, the day was celebrated by the District Police in collaboration with Saint Claret College, Ziro (SCCZ) at the latter’s auditorium.
Around 70 participants representing various sections of society, viz. Apatani Students’ Union, Apatani Youth Association, Apatani Women’s Association of Ziro, ZPMs of Ziro, Bar Association, GBs and educators joined the event. DIGP (WR) Kime Aya was the Chief Guest and District and Sessions Judge, Ziro Lobsang Tenzin the Guest of Honour.
Speaking on the occasion, Principal, SCCZ Dr. Fr. Allwyn Mendoz reiterated the need for concerted efforts to weed out the menace. The DIGP lauded the anti-drug efforts of the District Police and the District and Sessions Judge threw light on the legal complications arising out of drug abuse and trade. Representing the DMO, ENT surgeon Dr. Hano Romesh and Student Counsellor, SCCZ Sr. Mary Vanaja spoke on the physiological impacts of addiction.
The session was organized under the initiative of the District Police led by SP Harsh Indora, DSP Tasi Darrang and other officers.
In the opium-affected district of Anjaw, the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was observed through an awareness rally organized by Drug De-Addiction Centre, Hayuliang which started from ADC office and culminated at Main Bazaar.
Participated by nearly 45 anti-drug campaigners, the rally was flagged off by Additional Deputy Commissioner Sotailum Bellai in presence of police and officials of the District Administration, Anjaw Mishmi Women Welfare Society, All Mishmi Students’ Union, Anjaw Labour Union, Bazar Committee, Hayuliang and staff of the drug de-addiction centre. Amik Matai Society, NERCORMP, Arunachal Pradesh Drug De-Addiction Society and Directorate of Health Services were the collaborators in the event. Appealing the district’s government officials who are addicted to drugs to go for treatment, the ADC reminded that disciplinary action will be taken by the government after July 31, the deadline for disclosure.
Representing Mishmi Women Welfare Society, Beauty Pul informed that the organization will aggressively fight the menace in the district which is spoiling the young lives of the Mishmi community. Office-In-Charge of Khupa Police Station Kapseng Techi appealed to the opium growers to opt for agriculture and allied activities for livelihood and income generation.
In Tirap, the day was celebrated by the District Police at headquarters Khonsa and sub-divisional headquarters in Deomali and Lazu.
Rallies with anti-drug slogans and placards depicting the negative impact of drugs were organized. Elaborating on how substance abuse leads to health hazards and rise in anti-social activities, the district police appealed all to help the administration by passing on information relating to drug abuse.
SP Tirap Kardak Riba informed that an online essay and drawing competition on the topic ‘Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking’ carrying attractive cash prizes was conducted, the result of which will be declared soon. With DIPRO inputs
