Lower Siang Impasse

ITANAGAR, Apr 7:  The impasse over the functioning of Lower Siang district doesn’t look to die down anytime soon, with an upset Galo Peoples' Federation (GPF) today announcing to launch a bandh call, protest rally including boycott of work by government employees if the demands are not met soon.

Irked by the non-response of state government, Galo Peoples' Federation (GPF) has urged Chief Minister Pema Khandu to immediately post Deputy Commissioner and other Head of Departments at Likabali the temporary headquarters of newly created Lower Siang district within stipulated time failing which it has threatened to call a 36 hour bandh in all Galo inhabited areas and a protest rally in the state capital, Itanagar on April 10 next.

‘The Lower Siang issue is almost two decades old demand of the community and was also notified  in 2014  but till date it  has  not been made functional, whereas  young  districts like Longding and Kra Daadi are already functioning  well,’ said President Nyadar Loya speaking to reporters at press club today.

‘Despite repeated memorandums and representation to the state government, authority has failed to ponder upon the demand of the Galo community. The indifference of the Chief Minister towards this particular community reflects his intention to hurt and make the common people suffer,’ Loya asserted.

The GPF has appealed fellow Arunachalese to support their cause and to participate in the proposed protest rally. Moreover, government employees belonging to the community will also boycott their work on the particular day as a mark of protest.

‘The demand for Lower Siang district  was in the pipeline since 1994 but  despite  passage of two decades people of the area are still fighting for  their right despite the notification on 4th March 2014,’ lamented spokesperson GPF, Tujum Poyom.  He further underscored that the demand is for immediate posting of Deputy Commissioner, Superintendent of Police and other HoDs in the temporary headquarters Likablai, as assured by CM Pema Khandu.
