ITANAGAR, Apr 24: Expressing concern in the wake of the second wave of COVID-19 and surging cases in the state, the Arunachal Pradesh unit of Indian Medical Association (IMA-AP) has appealed to the denizens to get vaccinated and to follow COVID appropriate behavior.
Addressing the media persons at the Arunachal Press Club here on Saturday, General Secretary IMA-AP Dr. Jego Ori attributed the sudden rise in Covid cases in the state to inappropriate behaviour, reluctance to being vaccinated and mutation in the virus.
"Though the state has not witnessed enormous rise in Covid cases as compared to other states, the numbers will amplify if people avoid following the basic precautions issued in public interest by the state government," cautioned Dr Ori.
He said that the sudden rise in Covid cases is due to the inappropriate behaviour of people not wearing masks, mass gathering, no hand sanitizing and reluctance to getting vaccinated.
“We have to go on with the same advance which was followed during the first wave of Covid by creating awareness among the public of wearing masks, hand sanitization and maintaining social distance. By community participation, we hope to beat the second wave before it’s too late,” he said.
Unlike other states, where the entire health system is collapsed, we should work together to avoid the same situation in our state, he added.
Appealing the public to come forward and get vaccinated, IMA-AP Vice President Dr Kessang said that as the state government has already announced the vaccine free, therefore every individual from the age of 18 years and above can register for the same online or even offline.
He even appealed to those who have got vaccinated with their first dose to be careful as they can be carriers of the virus. You may not get infected by the virus but can carry the virus infecting others, he added.
“Even if we succeed in vaccinating 70% of our state population, we can contain the spread of the virus,” he said, adding that above one lakh of the population has so far been vaccinated.
Meanwhile, when questioned on any chances for state lock-down, IMA-AP President Dr. Lobsang Tsetim said that lock down is the ‘last resort’ but as of now the situation doesn’t call for that.
He said, though the situation is grim by the second wave of Covid, the health department is well prepared and equipped to fight the pandemic. He said the department has sufficient beds in ICU, ventilators and also oxygen plants in five of the districts.
