Meanwhile, Social Work Mobiliser (SWM-ICR)- District Tobacco Control Cell (DTCC) K. Alisha said that the anti tobacco campaign has been in existence for decades to create awareness on health issues as well as their rights to voice against the illegal sale and consumption of tobacco.
She said that society should be aware of the Cigarette and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) 2003. Under the Act, one cannot sell Tobacco products illegally.
“There is a law to not sell Tobacco products within 100 yards from educational institutions. Even children under the age of 18 years are not supposed to sell or consume the product,” she said, adding that, unfortunately such cases are common in society.
She said, despite low awareness in society on the consumption and selling of Tobacco products, the DTCC has been making all efforts to educate the public on COTPA.
She also said the DTCC is more focused on creating awareness among the people on the COTPA. Then accordingly, in time, the DTCC along with the district administration will initiate seizing, arresting people smoking in public spaces.
There are also raids where illegal trading of Tobacco is in practice, she added.
