ITANAGAR, Jan 6: Member, National Commission for Women (NCW) Shyamala S Kundar called on Governor Brig. (Dr.) B. D. Mishra (Retd.) and Chief Minister Pema Khandu in separate interactions today here in the state capital.
Meeting the Governor at the Raj Bhavan, the NCW member discussed measures for reinforcing security and wellbeing of womenfolk in Arunachal Pradesh. The Governor who arranged rescue of several girls and women in distress while emphasising on prompt response to the complaints lodged by the victims followed by a constant follow-up, suggested her for attaching livelihood components for rescued women. He said that by providing a source of livelihood, the Commission can guarantee a better life for the helpless women.
Commending the Arunachal Pradesh State Commission for Women (APSCW), Department of Women and Child Development and Oju Welfare Association for their praiseworthy contributions towards women's welfare, the Governor called for more shelters for the rescued women and children. The rescued persons must be provided skill training on tailoring, weaving and handicraft works, service sector works etc. for self-reliance, he suggested. The NCW member appreciated the suggestions and assured to take them up at the national level for appropriate implementation.
Chairperson, APSCW Radhilu Chai Techi and Secretary, Women and Child Development Department Niharika Rai were present in the meeting.
The NCW member also met the Chief Minister on the day accompanied by the APSCW Chairperson.
The meeting discussed issues related to women’s rights and substance abuse among women. “Women in Arunachal are better off yet miles to go and polygamy is an issue that still plagues the tribal society in the state,” Khandu said while assuring the representatives of the NCW and APSCW that involvement of any uniformed personnel in substance abuse is being strictly dealt with. The APSCW member raised the issue of equal rights of women over parental property. The Chief Minister suggested a seminar on the issue for raising awareness and assured his full cooperation.
The meeting also discussed strengthening of One Stop Centre (OSC) Sakhi to support the women affected by violence.
