ITANAGAR, Dec 29: Governor BD Mishra today graced a voluntary blood donation camp at Ramakrishna Mission Hospital, Itanagar.

Organised by the Arunachal Voluntary Blood Donor Organization (AVBDO), a unit of Arunachal Vivekananda Yuva Shakti (AVYS), in association with State Blood Transfusion Council (SBTC), Ramakrishna Mission Hospital and Arunachal Pradesh Society for Education and Development (APSED), the camp is the 71st blood donation initiative of AVYS.

Urging upon the people to come forward and donate blood, the Governor said that a unit of their blood can save many lives and bring happiness to many families.

The Governor, who is the ex-officio President of Indian Red Cross Society, Arunachal Pradesh State Branch appreciated the Arunachal Voluntary Blood Donor Organization and Arunachal Vivekananda Yuva Shakti for their selfless service to the sick and wounded, needing blood for their survival. He called upon the youth of the State to emulate AVYS and help the needy persons.

The Governor emphasised that blood donation should be without any commercial motive. ‘It should be by one’s free will for the service to humanity. Every needy person should be provided blood without any prejudice or partiality,’ he said.

Recalling the military operation carried out by him as an Indian Peace Keeping Force Brigade Commander in Sri Lanka in 1988, the Governor said that he and his troops had donated blood for the wounded and captured enemy soldiers under the provisions of the Geneva Convention.  The Governor said that the blood donation for sick and wounded has been a proud military tradition in the Indian Army.

It was heartening to see that people in our Civil Society are following up the noble tradition of blood donation with enthusiasm, the Governor said.  The Governor complimented Ramesh Jeke and his team for holding the camp.

Swami Pradeeptananda Maharaj, Asst. Secretary, Ramakrishna Mission Hospital, Itanagar, Chief Advisor of Arunachal Vivekananda Yuva Shakti and senior journalist Pradeep Kumar Bahera and Chairman, Arunachal Voluntary Blood Donor Organization Ramesh Jeke also spoke in the function.

Jeke explained that the camp has been organised anticipating many accidents in the New Year festivities. He informed that last year four lives were lost for want of blood during the New Year.

Indian Red Cross Society Arunachal Pradesh State Branch Honorary Secretary Dr. Emi Rumi, Joint Director, Directorate of Health Service, Dr. Nabum Budh, Deputy Director State Blood Transfusion Council, senior doctors of Ramakrishna Mission Hospital, volunteers of AVYS and blood donors were present on the occasion.

Later the Governor interacted with the volunteer donors and advised them to carry forward the philanthropic work. He also distributed donor certificate to the first donor.
