Traditional artisans honoured with State Awards on National Handloom Day

 

ITANAGAR, Aug 7: On the eve of the 7th National Handloom Day on Saturday, the artisans, weavers and craftsmen of the state who have made remarkable contributions in enriching and furthering the craft of traditional Arunachalee handloom weaving were honoured with State Awards that were handed over by Governor Brig. (Dr.) B. D. Mishra (Retd.).
In the event that was organised at the Raj Bhavan, besides handing over the State Awards the Governor also felicitated the selected NGOs for their contributions towards women self-reliance and empowerment. Every citizen in the state must adopt local loom products in daily use, he said while exhorting to preserve and propagate the age-old art of traditional Arunachalee handloom weaving. He also appealed to the people, particularly the officials, to spread awareness on ‘Vocal for Local’ schemes launched by the Central government for the benefit of weavers. “Weaving tradition of Arunachal Pradesh is an age-old cultural heritage coming down from generation to generation which is found in each and every household. Rightfully, this tradition must be passed on to the future generation and the youths must connect with the roots,” the Governor said. Congratulating the award winners, he urged them to promote their expertise and pass it on to the future generations.
Participating in the day-long celebrations, the First Lady of the state Neelam Misra distributed yarns to the local weavers and unveiled an ‘Arunachalee Mishran Dress’ which represents various major tribes of the state and showcases their unique ethnic original designs and motif colours. Conceptualized by the First Lady and translated into drawing by Chairperson, Oju Welfare Association Ratan Anya, the dress was woven by the OWA team headed by Master Artisan and National Merit Craftsmanship Awardee in 2001, Agni Das. MLA cum Adviser, Industries, Textile and Handicrafts Rode Bui gave away the trophies to the state awardees. 
Pema Tashi (Kalaktang), Ige Ete (Darka), Amma Bagbi (Itanagar), Reema Megu (Namsing village), Jai Bagra (Bam village) and Taru Otung (Hija village) received this year’s State Awards for handicrafts and handloom weaving. Dedicated artisans of the Textile and Handicrafts department, Onima Tayeng (Pasighat), Tilling Nisha (RDC, Doimukh), Yatum Murtem (Raga) and Tasso Meena (Tezu) were felicitated. Caretaker, Donyi Polo Mission School for the Hearing Impaired Sammang Tayeng who is providing vocational training on weaving to the differently-abled children, Sushri Dopa Pasi, a weaver and Sushri Phurpa Zomba, who learnt weaving were also felicitated. 
Selected NGOs namely Seinthuk Women Self Help Group, Shergaon, Arun Kuti Udyog Cooperative Society, Ziro, M.G. Community Skill Development & Training Centre, Oyan, Diilyan Diibu Multipurpose Cooperative Society Ltd., Ziro, Dream Weaves, Naharlagun and Oju Welfare Association, Naharlagun were felicitated on the occasion by the Governor.
Earlier, Secretary, Industries, Textile and Handicrafts Swapnil Naik highlighted the endeavours and achievements of the department in promotion of local artisans and weavers and handicraft products. Deputy Director, Khadi and Village Industries Commission, Union Ministry of MSME, Aman Deep gave a PowerPoint Presentation on e-marketing. 
Stalls showcasing the products of the award winning artisans were also arranged by the Department of Textile and Handicrafts. PRO Raj Bhavan
