SHILLONG, Mar 23: Governor Brig. (Dr) B.D. Mishra (Retd.) today attended the 186th Raising Day ceremony of Assam Rifles as Chief Guest in Laitkor, near the Meghalaya capital.
While felicitating the Assam Rifles Director General Lt. General Sukhdeep Sangwan, officers and all ranks of the force, Mishra commended them for their matchless spirit, courage and commitment in securing the 1643 km long Indo-Myanmar international border. Interacting with the AR personnel cutting across ranks including the retired and Next of Kin (NoK) of those who laid down their lives while serving the nation, the Governor said that Assam Rifles being the country’s oldest paramilitary force with an 186-year of outstanding history of commitment, has immensely contributed towards peace and tranquillity in the Northeast.
Over the years, AR has become an inseparable part of the Northeast states and very rightly and fondly has been recognised by the indigenous population as 'Friends of the North East', he said. “It plays an important role in containing insurgency in the sensitive areas of the region and with the prevailing disturbing situation in Myanmar, its role has become more important,” the Governor stated, while exhorting the rank and file of the force to continue upholding the highest traditions of services.
