ITANAGAR, Aug 20: The Peoples’ Party of Arunachal has urged the state government to take up the East West Industrial Corridor highway spanning across the foothills of Arunachal Pradesh on priority considering the changing scenario of interstate relationship between the northeastern states especially as the state shares common boundary issues with Assam.
Citing the recent Assam-Mizoram incident, the PPA said it should be a lesson as 16 districts of Arunachal share a common boundary with Assam. Many of the areas in Arunachal Pradesh have been silent victims of forcible encroachments by the people of Assam backed by the Assam Police and its forest officials which remain unreported due to the laxity of the state government. It is a matter of serious concern that all these incidents of encroachments are occurring when the boundary issue between both the states is in the Supreme Court, the PPA said.
“The People's Party of Arunachal would like to urge upon the state government to approach the whole issue of East West Industrial Corridor into two parts without any further delay arising out of Pakke Tiger Reserve controversy.
East (Ruksin to Itanagar) West (Itanagar to Bhalukpong)-- The more populous Eastern part will have less difficulty in preparing the DPR (if it is yet to be) will have less problem acquiring land as many existing stretches (like Ruksin-Nari, Likabali-Kangku) can be co-opted within the EWIC. Just because of the ongoing tussle between the Ministry of Environment & Forest and PWD over the Pakke Reserve State, the promising EWIC should not be further delayed,” Secretary General PPA, Kaling Jerang said in a statement this evening.
The PPA also appealed to all the political parties, community based organizations, civil societies and the All Arunachal Pradesh Students' Union (AAPSU) in sensitizing the people of the state on the need of the project for a self-reliant state. The state government henceforth should take up this project on war footing and come over the decades long dependence on Assam roads, the party said.
