Indian Army conducts ‘Know Your Army’ outreach
ZIRO, Feb 15: Hapoli Forest Division in collaboration with Ngunu Ziro, a local NGO which works for ecological conservation conducted an expedition-cum-cleanliness drive at the Tale Wildlife Sanctuary from February 10-13 last.
Besides cleaning the Pange river banks which lie at the boundary of the sanctuary, a cleanliness drive was also conducted through a trekking expedition up to Tale Valley. Deputy Commissioner, Lower Subansiri district Swetika Sachan flagged off the initiative in presence of Divisional Forest Officer Abhinav Kumar, EAC Bamin Tarang, RFO Tale WLS Ngilyang Tachang and NGO members. The DC advised the Forest Department to install dustbins along the river banks to minimise littering of plastic and other non-biodegradable items left over by visitors. The DFO while acknowledging the problem of garbage littering informed that plans are underway to regulate the entry of Single Use Plastics in collaboration with an Eco Development Committee (EDC). Installation of dustbins and imposition of fines for littering are the measures to be rolled out soon, he added.
Botanical Survey of India (BSI) researcher Ashish Soni who is currently working with its Arunachal Pradesh Regional Centre, Itanagar and researching on fern species of Lower Subansiri helped in the identification of 64 species of ferns during the expedition which included the rare Polystichum Polyodon. A rare species of bird, the Eurasian Woodcock which was hitherto never spotted in the Tale WLS was also photographed.
Tale valley is one of the most diverse biodiversity spots in the state with a variety of species of butterflies, birds, orchids, rhododendrons, ferns and rare medicinal herbs. It is also revered in the folklore of the Apatani tribe as being the area where the first men and women from the tribe had settled before finally migrating to the Ziro Valley. DIPRO
