ZIRO, Apr 9: With the aim of making the ongoing state-wide Airgun Surrender Abhiyan successful in Ziro Valley, a public meeting was convened today at Hija village between the All Apatani Gaon Bura Buri Welfare Association Ziro (AAGBWAZ) and Hapoli Forest Division.
Citing the drive’s overwhelming success in East Siang district, DFO Abhinav Kumar exhorted the members of AAGBWAZ to participate, while acknowledging their importance as grassroots level functionaries. The DFO recalled the earlier times when migratory birds from Tibet and Siberia including the critically endangered Black Necked Crane (Grus Nigricollis) used to seek refuge in the valley. There were  lots of Hornbills in the valley but due to unabated hunting, these birds cannot be spotted anywhere now, he rued while appealing all to take part in the Surrender Abhiyan voluntarily. Registration of chain saw will also be integrated with the Abhiyan by the Forest Department as according to Arunachal Pradesh Chainsaw (Control and Regulations) Rules 2019, it is illegal to use power chain saws without valid license. There is a provision for registration of the already purchased power chain saws through the respective DFOs and any unregistered equipment can be seized by the concerned Range Forest Officer as per rules. President, AAGBWAZ Nani Hanya assured the DFO that the association will ensure wide participation from all villages in the valley.
As of now, the Abhiyan which was launched on March 17 last in Seppa has received massive response across the state. At Pasighat, 370 airguns were surrendered before the CM and Minister of Environment and Forest. DIPRO
