AALO, Apr 29: A sudden raid today here in the township’s markets near Government Higher Secondary School and R.K. Mission School by the Flying Squad led to the seizure of large quantities of gutka, pan masala, cigarettes and other tobacco products, the sale of which is prohibited within a radius of 100 yards from educational institutions.
The Flying Squad was led by Magistrate Koj Yabyang, EAC accompanied by Chairperson, Mothers’ Vision and her team, police and field officials. The erring shopkeepers were imposed a fine of Rs. 200 each for selling the prohibited items within the 100-yard radius of the schools and for facilitating their access to persons below 18 years which contravenes Section 7, Section-6(a) and Section 4 of COTPA 2003. This is the second raid carried out by the team at vulnerable locations in the township. The seized products will be assessed by the committee and thereafter destroyed by burning.
The primary intention of the raids is to discourage people from spitting chewed tobacco products in public places which increases the possibility of faster spread of Covid-19. DIPRO
