ITANAGAR, Dec 3:The First Lady of the State Neelam Misra graced the International Day of Persons with Disabilities celebration at Donyi Polo Mission School for the Hearing and Visually Impaired, Chimpu, Itanagar on Sunday.

Speaking at the programme, she urged every member of society to contribute to help the differently abled children to integrate them into the mainstream.

‘The children of special need deserve respect, not pity and equality and not dependence. It is the social responsibility of all to assist these children to be independent,’ she emphasised while assuring that she will remain connected with the school.

The First Lady felicitated the managing committee of Donyi Polo Mission and teachers and staff of Donyi Polo Mission School for the Hearing and Visually Impaired, Chimpu for the commendable and dedicated service towards the wellbeing of the special children. She also appreciated those who had morally or financially helped the school.

Director, Social Justice, Empowerment & Tribal Affairs, Yumlam Kaha, Secretary, Ramakrishna Mission Hospital, Itanagar, Swami Vishweshananda, and Chairman, Donyi Polo Mission, former chief minister Gegong Apang, also spoke on the special occasion.

Kaha highlighted on the proposed enhanced reservation for the disabled people in employment avenues, while Secretary, Ramakrishna Mission Hospital assured to continue the free healthcare service to the inmates of the school.

Apang informed that the Donyi Polo Mission proposes to upgrade the school to higher secondary standard and also to start a school for mentally challenged children. He appealed for support from the people and state government for the projects.

A colourful cultural programme, including a fashion show of traditional attires by the differently abled children and violin presentation led by Pill Jamja, a self taught young musician and the lone violinist in the State, who provide free music classes to students of the school, were presented on the occasion.

The First Lady gave away prizes to the best students in various competitions and fields during the function. She also distributed gifts from Raj Bhavan to the children of the school.

Earlier, the First Lady visited the school campus and interacted with the visually and hearing impaired children. In her maiden visit to the campus, she also visited the waste paper recycling plant of the school, where the staffers demonstrated the process of preparing paper bags, writing pads, writing papers, carry bags and cards etc. from waste papers. Sharing her experience, she suggested some finer points to make the product more marketable.

Later, she met the all-girls team from the school for the ensuing ‘Seven a Side Siang Cup’ football tournament at Oyan, East Siang District and wished them her best.

AT KHONSA:

Along with rest of the world International Day of Persons with Disabilities was observed at Khonsa under the aegis of SSA District Mission Tirap. Prabhat pheri, drawing, painting and solo songs competition was also held at BRC’s office hall, Khonsa to mark the day.
