PASIGHAT, Apr 5: The Primary Health Centre of Jeying near Silli village under Katan Circle in Upper Siang district that has been operational for the last 15 years is staring at a closure.
Managed and run by the Karuna Trust, the PHC is about to close down due to unconvincing reasons which has faced stiff opposition from the people of Silli-Jeying and nearby villages. An appeal to revoke the decision has been made by them to the state government. As per the Chairman of the Advisory and Management Committee of PHC Geying, Mik Tayeng, an incident of conflict between a couple took place in the first week of March wherein the male partner resorted to gunfire to open the lock of the door of his female partner's quarter who happened to be a nurse at PHC. Although no casualty was reported since the nurse was not present at the quarter, the incident has shaken the staff and management of Karuna Trust. However, Tayeng added that the reason of conflict between a couple can’t be summed up as the sole cause to close down the centre as the concerned nurse was ready to bear the expenses of repair caused to the damaged quarter.
The people of the feeder villages of PHC Jeying namely Silli, Pongging, Jeru, Padu and Adi Pasi are now under deep concern over the news of a possible closure of the PHC as it is the lone health centre in the region. In this connection a meeting of the management committee including the stakeholders of the above villages was called in Jeying today. However, most of the representatives didn’t turn up, Tayeng informed, while appealing to the Health & Family Welfare Minister Alo Libang and Geku-Mariyang MLA Kanggong Taku to take adequate steps to stop the closure. “We want Karuna Trust to continue the running and management of the PHC and under any circumstances the centre shouldn’t be handed over to the government as it has been smoothly managed with proper supply of free medicines,” added Tayeng.
Meanwhile, the people of Jeying and Silli villages have also appealed to both BSNL and Bharti Airtel authorities to ensure proper upkeep of the telecom towers for uninterrupted services.
