Arunachal Pradesh Police (APP) had registered 86 FIRs and arrested 143 people in connection with drug consumption and trafficking from across the state within one and a half month which is the highest so far compared to the entire previous year, he informed. These arrests were made following the annual conference of the SSPs/COs in Tawang on April 19 last, the Minister added. In the conference, CM stressed on the fight against drug menace in the state to make Arunachal drug free by 2022.
Felix also disclosed that 800gm brown sugar, 207kg ganja, 1.8kg opium,1.2kg heroin and Rs 1,23,830 in cash were seized by the police between April 21 to June 6. Besides the above haul, seven .32 pistols with 7 live rounds without licenses, 12 bore SBBL guns with 18 live rounds, 9mm pistol, 3 AK live ammunition and one Chinese-made hand grenade were also recovered from the drug peddlers. At least 25 men in uniform were arrested and suspended and 2 were dismissed from job either on charges of drug consumption or trafficking, Felix detailed, adding that the state government has given an opportunity for rehabilitation with a deadline of July 31 for the addicted personnel/officials, failing which random test will be done and action will be taken accordingly.
“It is not the duty of the police department alone to eradicate the drug menace from the state but also a responsibility of the citizens too,” he said, appealing the citizens to inform the police about any kind of drug activity for which the name of the informer will be kept secret. Responding to a query, the Minister informed that the state government is working out to build state rehabilitation centres across the state as per need and sponsor other rehab centres run by the NGOs. Acknowledging the women's welfare organizations and the NGOs of the state for providing information on drug trade and usage, Director General of Police (DGP) RP Upadhyaya said that drug menace can only be eradicated through people’s participation.
“The toughest job in eradicating drug menace is to break the network of drug suppliers. The state police is working in coordination with neighbouring states like Assam in the war against drug menace. It is very unfortunate that a few men in uniform are involved. However, irrespective of the position we will take strict action against all those found involved," the DGP assured.
