The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights while underscoring the indispensable role of the state and society has urged to ensure the protection of child rights as enshrined in the Constitution of India.

In order to touch every child, Commission seeks a deeper penetration to communities and households and sees an indispensable role for the State, sound institution-building processes and larger societal concern for children and their well-being”.

Speaking on the issue of substance abuse, he asserted that prevention of substance abuse among adolescents requires awareness of characteristics that place youth at risk and targeting risk factors that are modifiable.

‘The roles of family and community prevention programs are vital to deter children and adolescent substance abuse,’ Kanoongo said.

Deputy Commissioner Tamiyo Tatak while seeking concerted effort has asked NGOs and students unions in particular and society as a whole to work with the law enforcing agencies on a multi-pronged strategy to eradicate the menace of drug menace, said “it threatens the very survival of our future generation”.

The abuse of alcohol and drugs continues to be a major health problem internationally. Existing studies have found that drug users start abusing at an early age and responsible for significant morbidity and unfortunately treatment of drug addiction creates a tremendous burden on society. Alcohol and other drug use in the adolescent population carries a high risk for school underachievement, delinquency and depression, opined Tatak.

To spread awareness, a “Child Mela” will be organized in the second week of April next year and all students (Class VI to XII) of government and private schools will be invited to participate, the DC informed.

According to Superintendent of Police Prashant Gautam, abuse of alcohol and drugs has resulted in significant morbidity and mortality among adolescents worldwide.
