TEZU, Jan 16: For Anjaw, Lohit and other Eastern districts of the state which continue to reel under the menace of opium, the 10-bed Drug De-addiction Centre at Zonal Hospital Tezu has emerged as a ray of hope.
Since June 2017 the rehab centre has been engaged in the noble cause of de-addicting the victims. Visiting the centre recently, retired Chief Engineer PHED-cum-Opium Management Chairman of Lohit and Anjaw Er. Lupalum Kri exhorted the inmates to get out of the trap of opium addiction and return to mainstream life. “We should openly discuss and share opinions rising above party politics to solve the issue permanently. Though initially we faced stiff resistance, over the years we managed to notice positive changes. I took the pledge to eradicate opium addiction in the under-30 age group by 2030,” he said. “My deep concern over drug addiction prompted me to spearhead the campaign to bring mass awareness against illegal cultivation and sale of opium,” Kri said, while donating Rs 25,000 as a financial assistance for medicines.
“The centre was set up to de-addict all kinds of addictions and since inception, 401 persons have undergone treatment. We are working under all odds to fulfil our duties and there is a psychologist and a counsellor besides nurses. Resource persons are also invited from time to time to deliver motivating messages to the addicts,” SMO and special caretaker of the centre Dr S Towang informed.
Over 8 inmates from Anjaw, Lohit and Namsai districts are currently undergoing rehab at the centre.
