NIRJULI, Oct 26: Tense scenes unfolded at Nirjuli Police Station today as the family members of late Gomchu Yekar, joined by local residents and members of the Upper Subansiri Law Students’ Union, staged a massive protest demanding the immediate arrest of Talo Potom, IAS in connection with the alleged suicide of 19-year-old Yekar.
A large crowd gathered outside the police station, chanting slogans seeking justice for the deceased youth. Protesters accused the authorities of deliberately delaying action against the senior bureaucrat despite serious allegations of sexual harassment, coercion, and abetment to suicide.
Emotions ran high as Yekar’s grieving mother, visibly distressed, appealed to the police to act swiftly. “My son died because of Talo Potom. I want justice. Why is the police delaying his arrest?” she cried, blaming both the officer and the police for their alleged inaction.
The protest was fueled by frustration over what the demonstrators described as administrative indifference in handling the case. They reiterated that justice must be delivered without fear or favour, regardless of the accused’s official status.
Earlier, Tagom Yekar, father of the deceased had issued a public appeal urging student unions, NGOs, SHGs, and well-wishers across Arunachal Pradesh—especially from the Tagin community—to assemble at Nirjuli Police Station on October 27 at 9:00 AM.
The gathering, he said, aims to pressurize the police to take immediate action against former Deputy Commissioner of the Itanagar Capital Region, Talo Potom, who is allegedly evading arrest even after being named in the suicide note left behind by his son.
“We only seek justice for my late son,” Tagom Yekar stated, calling for public solidarity to ensure that “no one, regardless of power or position, is above the law.”
