ITANAGAR, Jul 1: A team from the All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) led by its President Hawa Bagang and General Secretary Tobom Dai today attended a high-level Group of Ministers’ meeting chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein that discussed the issue of large-scale encroachment by the illegal Chakma immigrants at Kathan and other areas of Arunachal Pradesh.
Home Minister Bamang Felix, Minister (Environment & Forest), Minister (UD & Housing) and MLA (Bordumsa-Diyun) also attended the meeting. Although the issue of granting of citizenship to the Chakmas is currently pending at the Supreme Court, it doesn't mean that they can go on usurping the community lands belonging to indigenous communities, the AAPSU delegation said while stressing on proactive measures from all stakeholders for a permanent solution. The union also requested the state government for the constitution of a state-level high powered committee for containing the continuous influx and encroachment by the illegal Chakma immigrants along with identification of their original allotted blocks within the next 7 days. An appeal regarding an early settlement of the administrative boundary between Lohit and Changlang districts was also made by the union, reasoning that the boundary issue between the indigenous Mishmi and Singpho communities have already been settled mutually. Drawing attention to the hardships faced by the people of Kathan, the union also urged for installation of the BSNL mobile network service in the said area and permanent stationing of para military forces to maintain law and order.
According to AAPSU's press release, the state government has assured to positively look into the demands of the union for the greater interest of the state’s indigenous people.
