ITANAGAR, Jul 7:  The government of Arunachal Pradesh has generated at least Rs. 105 crore revenue from the 25% cess which was imposed on alcoholic beverages on May 8, 2020.
This was informed today by Commissioner, Tax & Excise Kangki Darang. Speaking to the media, the T&E Commissioner informed that the cess that was imposed with the aim to meet up the COVID-19 related expenses and for strengthening the state’s health infrastructure has been withdrawn on and from June 5 last. The department has collected Rs. 105 crore revenue from the 25% cess on alcoholic beverages, the Commissioner informed, adding that the state cabinet has withdrawn it after observing the improvement in  COVID situation. 
Darang also informed that to companionate  the ‘cess’, the state government has resolved to increase the excise duty of various alcoholic beverages and the decision was taken at a cabinet meeting held in June last. He further added that since 2015 the department hasn’t imposed excise duty on alcoholic beverages and hence it will impose an enhanced 148 percent excise duty. “We have an additional target to generate at least Rs 106 crore from excise duties,” the T&E Commissioner informed.
It is pertinent to mention that the cess was imposed with a target to generate a revenue of Rs 70 crore to combat COVID-19 and surpassing the expectation, Rs 105 cr has been realised.
