ITANAGAR, May 19: Minister, Environment & Forests Mama Natung on Wednesday morning visited the krall at the capital’s Biological Park, the spot where a day earlier zoo attendant Poulash Karmakar was mauled to death by a Royal Bengal tigress.
While extending condolences to the bereaved family members of Kamakar, Natung directed PCCF & Principal Secretary R.K. Singh to constitute a five-member committee and submit a fact-finding report within a week to the state government. After interacting with the park officials and animal attendants at length and speaking to reporters thereafter the Minister observed that the incident might have resulted due to negligence. He also promised to help the family of the deceased with an ex-gratia amount as per existing norms of the state government and provide employment to one eligible family member. PCCF Wildlife G. Kumar and other senior forest officers of the department accompanied the Minister during the visit. Hailing from Dhekiajuli under Lakhimpur district of Assam, the 35-year old zoo attendant died on the spot after being attacked by the tigress.
Meanwhile, Curator of Biological Park Raya Flago informed that the dead body of the deceased will be transported to his native place after post mortem. Transportation and manpower have been arranged and the body will be handed over to the deceased’s family members, he said. “The incident is very unfortunate, but we will ensure such incidents are not repeated. Moreover, we provide weekly training to our staff before assigning duties,” he said, adding that the deceased was very sincere and well-equipped with the knowledge to handle animals.
