ITANAGAR, May 26 :Four days after the shocking incident in which the Director of Audit & Pension was threatened and assaulted by two unidentified men to extort money; Capital police after a rigorous manhunt has finally cracked the sensational case by arresting 4 persons in this connection.

The first accused arrested by police has been identified as one Chello John, 24, from Chello village, Koloriang, Kurung Kumey. John, who is wanted in at least 4 similar extortion cases registered against him 2010/2012/2013 under section 436/447/394/506/342/326/396 of IPC in PS, Naharlagun, was arrested by police on the same day of the incident, during a routine check by Police.

Following  the arrest on Tuesday last and information received of the hideouts of others during preliminary interrogation, the police apprehended his  accomplice, identified as Sonam Para, 24, of Para village, Seppa, East Kameng from E-Sector, Naharlagun on May 25 last by a team led by Sub inspector, Naharlagun PS, Techi Nega.

Sonam Para alias Sunday Para is also reportedly wanted in 8 similar cases including petty crimes like theft etc under section 457/380 etc of Indian penal court (IPC) registered at Police station, Seppa.

The third accused, Sime Kilo, 35, who is a resident of Chayantajo, Seppa, East Kameng, was arrested from Kane Village, West Siang on Friday with coordinated efforts of West Siang District Police led by SP, West Siang, Mari Riba and SI, Rimi Taipodia, OC, PS Likabali and Sub-Inspector, Tali Kaye and later on also successfully arrested the fourth accused, Rima Boro on the same day.

Sime Kilo was also previously arrested in three accounts of crime in 2005, 2010 and 2006 under section 379/307/302/457/380 of IPC. His past record reveals that, he is already convicted in connection with a murder case, attempt to murder and theft cases including cases under Arms Act registered at Both Seppa and Naharlagun PS.

While the last accused Rima Boro was also wanted in criminal cases of under section 380/379/ 379 and 302 IPC r/w section 27 Arms act lodged at Naharlagun, Police station, police source said.

The police source also informed that the gang used to extort money for which they procured arms and explosives from Assam. After procuring arms they prepared videos posing with arms demanding ransom from victim and targeted person. Later they circulated these extortion videos and made calls to a number of persons demanding extortion money.

Meanwhile interacting with reporters at SP office, Itanagar, Deputy Inspector General, Taba Tusar informed that “after rigorous investigation and search, we have arrested 4 persons, who are the major players in the recent extortion attempt on Director, Audit & Pension office at Naharlagun on Monday last.

The DIG also informed that during the investigation several memory cards were also recovered from their possession containing recorded videos clips to exhort money. ‘Our investigations have revealed the extortionist used to record videos with banner, where extortion notices were written in Assamese and English and posed before the banner holding Arms to pressurize the victims and later they send the video clips to the victim and targeted persons to extort money,’ he said.

When questioned whether the accused are running an extortion group or working with some banned Underground Groups, the DIG replied that it is too early to comment on this aspect. However, he also asserted that police has been investigating the case from various angles and probe is on.

‘The arms and explosives used for committing the crime is also seized and taken into police custody along with 2 hand grenades and 5 (7.62) live ammunitions, 01(.22) live round and 05 rounds of small arms seized during investigation and search of their hideouts ,’ the DIG further said.

The DIG also lauded the Officers, who with their coordinated efforts have led to the arrest of the miscreants.
