SINGCHUNG, Oct 11: Minister for Environment & Forest Mama Natung on Monday launched the first Bogun Liocichla Utsav organised by Singchung Bogun Village Community Reserve (SBVCR) and Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary (EWS) to commemorate 15 years of discovery of Bogun Liocichla at Eaglenest Pass here on Monday.
Bogun Liocichla, a bird that was discovered in 2006, is unique to the Bugun community Reserve of Singchung village and neighbouring Eaglenest Pass.
Addressing the gathering, Natung appreciated former minister Naresh Glow, who is also the Founder cum Chairman of SBVCR. He also acknowledged Bugun and Sherdukpen community for coming together for an initiative to protect and preserve wildlife.
The state is blessed to have a diverse biodiversity. However, it is the responsibility and duty of the people to protect and preserve it, Natung said adding that the Environment & Forest Department is committed towards the protection of wildlife and is ensuring every possible help to do so.
"I also appeal to the rest of the communities of the state to adopt the policy of 'Community Reserve' and replicate it in their respective places. The role and participation of communities in preserving the endangered is vital," he said.
Stressing upon Aatma Nirbhar Abhiyaan, Natung appealed the villagers to create more Self Help Groups (SHG) to be self-sufficient to generate their own source of income. He appealed to the women sections to join in the campaign, specifically.
Besides, Natung also appealed to the gathering to fight against the drug menace in the district and make the best use of 5 days nature camp held during the Utsav (festival).
The SBVCR submitted a memorandum, to which the minister assured to look into and accordingly work on it.
Also ensuring every possible help from the department, PCCF RK Singh appreciated the role of SBVCR in the preservation and protection of wildlife. He said the SBVCR is formed under Wildlife Act and hoped many others follow the same path in endeavour to protect wildlife.
Meanwhile, Shergaon DFO B Darang highlighted about the roles and achievements of SBVCR.
Among others, former minister DK Thongdok, DCF (Wildlife and Biodiversity) Millo Tasar, PRI leaders and heads of departments were present on the day.
Earlier, Natung also visited the Tippi Orchid Research Centre and interacted with the officials and staff.
During his visit, Natung suggested ideas to improvise the working style and include public participation to create the centre for more tourist flow.
He said the research centre is the dignity of the state and he would make every possible help for proper maintenance and swift function of the place.
However, he also asked the staff and officials to make personal efforts for the greater interest of the place.
