RONO HILLS, Mar 22: One-day awareness generation programme on human rights was conducted by department of Political Science, Rajiv Gandhi University in collaboration with the National Human Rights Commission, New Delhi.

Programme coordinator Dr David Gao while welcoming the participants also introduced the gathering regarding the one day awareness programme on Human Rights and said that ‘the programme is to promote the Human Rights literacy amongst various sections of the society particularly the younger generation, public servant, police, NGOs, etc’.  

Professor S.N.Misra while delivering the keynote address of the programme said ‘democracy is declining and is now confined to elections only’. He further said ‘Humans need to be concern of values of humanity in order to understand human rights’.

Professor Amitav Mitra, Finance Officer, RGU while attending the programme as the Chief Guest advocated that ‘human Rights and human development are both closely connected and can secure freedom in all aspects and the challenge is to build up a culture of human Rights’. He also proposed for inclusion of human rights subject as a curriculum in schools.

Dani Belo, Under Secretary, Department of Law and Personal while attending the programme as a resource person and delivering on the importance of Human Rights emphasize that the ‘mechanism to address violations of Human Rights on the part of the state is weak’. He also further said that the ‘respective State Human Rights Commissions need to be more alert and address on the violations of human rights’.

Tadar Mepung, General Secretary, Indian Council for child Welfare while attending as a resource person said that ‘there are lacunas in the laws for women in the country, however there are also complaints by the opposite on misuse of laws by the women folks’. Referring to Arunachal Pradesh she also said that ‘customary laws should be in consonant with the provisions of the constitutions so that implementation of legal rules regarding women, human rights and child is achievable’. ‘There is an urgent need that the state government constitute the State Human Rights Commission at the earliest’, she said.

Dr Tabang Mibang and Dr Samanth Sahu also spoke on the occasion. The programme was also attended by Deans of various faculties, Heads of the departments, administrative staffs, students and research scholars of the university.
