PASIGHAT, Mar 12: The First Lady of the state Neelam Misra today while visiting the Government Emporium and Craft Centre here called for a revival of Arunachal’s age-old loin loom tradition.
Sharing her concern about the gradually diminishing traditional practice of loin loom weaving in the state due to the modern fashion trends and changing social norms, the First lady who herself has been practicing loin loom weaving, advocated for its revival. “Invasion of modern fashion trends may push the indigenous arts and craft into oblivion and sever the age-old family financial support source for the tribal ladies,” she observed while interacting with the weavers, artisans and entrepreneurs engaged in traditional loin loom weaving. Exhorting the local women, particularly the educated girls and working women to adopt the indigenous art of loin loom weaving as a hobby, she appealed them to take pride in Arunachalee cultural heritage and participate in the traditional weaving culture.  Loin loom weaving opens doors for every girl and woman to be self-empowered, she asserted. Later, the First Lady visited ‘Elam Industry’, a Pasighat-based garment making unit started by Group Captain Mohonto Panging, a retired Indian Air Force officer. Youths of the state must take inspiration from Group Captain Pangging and become entrepreneurs, she added.
The First Lady also visited the Eri Farm at Sille, 7 kms away from the township and while interacting with the officials there advised them to impart training to the local entrepreneurs and youths for self-employment.
