Itanagar, Jun 21: Along with the rest of the world, the 11th International Day of Yoga was celebrated with reverence and enthusiasm across Arunachal Pradesh on Saturday.
At Raj Bhavan, Itanagar, Governor Lt. General KT Parnaik (Retd.), led the observance along with officials from Raj Bhavan and the Department of Youth Affairs, senior officers and personnel from Indo-Tibetan Border Police (NE HQ), NCC cadets from the 1st Arunachal Pradesh Battalion, Bharat Scouts and Guides, and students from Sangay Lhaden Sports Academy. The yoga session was held at the General Bipin Rawat Hall of Raj Bhavan.
Addressing the gathering, the Governor extended warm wishes to the people of the State and expressed hope that the day would inspire more and more individuals to incorporate yoga into their lives. He conveyed heartfelt gratitude to yoga teachers, practitioners, and wellness champions whose dedication continues to keep this ancient tradition vibrant and relevant.
Recalling the global recognition yoga received under the visionary leadership of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, the Governor noted that the declaration of 21st June as the International Day of Yoga by the United Nations in 2014 transformed India’s timeless tradition into a worldwide movement for peace, wellness, and unity. ‘What began as a sacred practice on the banks of our rivers is now a bridge connecting hearts across continents’, he remarked.
Reflecting on this year’s theme, ‘Yoga for One Earth, One Health’, the Governor emphasized the profound link between personal well-being and the health of our planet. He said that yoga, rooted in the values of Ahimsa (non-violence), Satya (truth), and Aparigraha (non-possessiveness), promotes compassion, mindfulness, and ecological responsibility, encouraging a balanced and sustainable way of living.
Appealing especially to the youth, the Governor said that in today’s fast-paced and digitally driven world, yoga offers much-needed clarity and calm. More than just physical fitness, yoga nurtures emotional strength, mental focus, and self-awareness. By embracing it, young people can lead healthier, more conscious lives and become torchbearers of peace and wellness in their communities, he said.
As an ardent practitioner himself, the Governor shared simple ways to begin the practice, encouraging participants to start with just 10 to 15 minutes a day. Be it gentle stretches, Pranayama for better breathing, Surya Namaskar to energize mornings, or meditation for restful sleep, he emphasized that yoga is accessible to all, regardless of age or background. ‘Involve children and elders alike; the key lies in consistency and self-awareness’, he said.
The Governor urged everyone to inspire their families, peers, and communities to adopt this life-enhancing practice. He said that every breath reminds us of our responsibility to our health and to our Earth. Let us not just do yoga today, but live it every day. Only then can we build a world where inner peace fosters outer harmony and mindful living becomes a shared movement, the Governor said with conviction.
