NEW DELHI/ITANAGAR, Feb 21: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has listed one institution from Arunachal Pradesh in its latest “State-wise List of Fake Universities” released in February 2026, raising serious concerns over unauthorised higher education operations in the state.
According to the official list, there are 32 Fake Universities across the country, and amongst them is the Indian Institute of Alternative Medicine, located at 130A, Secretariat, Arunachal Pradesh, which has also been declared a fake university.
The Commission has issued letters to the State Government’s Department of Higher Education and concerned authorities, urging them to take appropriate action against such institutions operating without legal recognition.
The inclusion of an institution from Arunachal Pradesh in the national fake universities list has triggered concern among students and parents. Education experts warn that enrolling in unrecognised institutions can jeopardise students’ academic careers, as degrees issued by fake universities are not valid for higher studies, government jobs, or competitive examinations.
Authorities are expected to verify the operational status of the listed institute and initiate necessary legal steps to safeguard students’ interests. The UGC has also advised students to check the official UGC website for the list of recognised universities before seeking admission.
