ITANAGAR, Aug 27 (PTI): The Arunachal Pradesh Assembly today paid rich tribute to former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who passed away on August 16.

Speaker Tenzing Norbu Thongdok said the country had lost an excellent leader and a great poet in his demise.

"It was during his tenure that India successfully conducted nuclear tests at Pokhran, and renewed hopes for peace between India and Pakistan emerged with the start of the New Delhi-Lahore bus service."

The former prime minister's death was announced by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) hospital on August 16. He was 93.

"Vajpayee's idea was to develop the North East so that India could shine in the real sense," Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein said, adding, his principle of the country first,  party last had won the hearts of millions.

The House later observed a two-minute silence as a mark of respect to the departed leader, before the Speaker adjourned the proceedings for the day.
