ITANAGAR, Jun 16: Arunachal and Assam Police on Tuesday last conducted a joint combing operation at Seijosa Circle in Pakke Kessang district based on a tip-off that UG cadres of the National Liberation Front of Bodoland (NLFB) have set up a training camp in the forested area. However, except for recovering a few articles, no militants could be traced in the operation.
Sharing the details of the operation, APP PRO-cum-Superintendent of Police (SIT) Rohit Rajbir Singh informed that an information was received on June 5 from Assam Police that NLFB has set up a training camp somewhere in the forested area under Seijosa Circle of Pakke Kessang district. Officials from Assam Police led by Assam IGP Law and Order, Range DIGP Assam and SP Biswanath Charali met the senior officials of Arunachal Police at PHQ Itanagar and discussed about the hideout set up by the UGs based on past records of the UG movement. Accordingly, a special team under the leadership of IGP L & O Chukhu Apa, SP SIT Rohit Rajbir Singh and SP SB John Pada under overall supervision of DGP RP Upadhyaya was constituted. Technical and human surveillance were activated along with tracking of suspected mobile numbers and dump data analysis. The NTRO was contacted to provide requisite information regarding the camps. Sources were also activated in the probable hideouts to observe the movements or any activity relating to building of the camp by the newly formed militant organization. After receiving credible information that 2 camps have been spotted in the deep jungle by one of the sources, a team consisting of the STF, SIT, SB, 3rd Battalion IRBn and local police under supervision of IGP Chukhu Apa was formed to conduct the operation, while the Assam Police also formed a team consisting of commandos, Assam Police Rangers and local police under leadership of IGP L & O Deepak Kumar Kedia.
On June 15, a joint team of both the states consisting of 320 trained personnel was formed for executing the special task and special stops were placed at vulnerable spots along with vigil on all exit routes in both Assam and Arunachal. The team reached Goloso top (local name), the highest point in the area after criss-crossing rivers/creeks and trekking through the high hills. As per the strategy, the team disembarked on the suspected camp which was downhill and about half an hour trek from the Goloso top. Upon reaching the location of the suspected camp, the STF personnel were asked to proceed and snoop at the camp while the rest of the party remained at a distance. After gathering information the STF returned and informed that there are 2 camps at a distance of about 50 metres with some clothes and utensils placed outside.
The camp was made of bamboo with a temporary kitchen made of local thatch leaves. Based on the description of the camp, a 12-member STF team led by SP SIT and SP SB was formed to lead the assault. However, no movement of humans was observed nor any weapons were sighted in the camps. After an extensive search, items like one mobile phone with a sim card, 2 dummy wooden-made arms generally used in training by the UGs, clothes, sleeping bags, blankets, a 5 litre jar filled with diesel/kerosene, a tractor without number plate, a bicycle and wooden planks were found.
The entire exercise lasted for about 8 hours without any injury or untoward incident. According to the APP PRO, the camps were recently built and most probably by people engaged in timber cutting. Even after an extensive search the SIT could not find the persons although the sound of chainsaw was heard from a distance. They must have fled into the jungle after finding the team approaching, the release from PRO, APP stated.
