ITANAGAR, Apr 23: Arunachal Pradesh State Legal Services Authority (APSLSA) today organised an online awareness-cum-training programme on ‘Legal Aid Clinic and role of Para Legal Volunteers’ for the students of Arunachal Law Academy.
Member Secretary, APSLSA Jaweplu Chai briefed on the background of Legal Services Authority Act, free legal aid, role and functioning of Legal Aid Clinics and Lok Adalats. She also spoke on the role of Legal Aid Counsels and Para Legal Volunteers (PLVs) in facilitating access to justice for common people. Project Consultant, APSLSA Advocate Marie Riba covered topics such as the need for developing basic communications skills and best practices for PLVs, protection of children against sexual offences, POCSO Act, role of PLVs in reporting such cases and ideal follow-up procedures. Potection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005, Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 2005, Mental Health Care Act, 2017, NALSA (Legal Services to the Mentally ill and Mentally Disabled Persons) Scheme, 2015 were covered by her followed by an informative question-answer session with the PLVs.
Former Project Coordinator, Department of Justice Samuel Poumai dwelt on the topic ‘How to organize legal awareness camps, legal aid camps and door-to-door campaigns’. A total of 100 law students of Arunachal Law Academy participated in the programme.
