AALO, Feb 16: Arunachal Pradesh State Commission for Women (APSCW) in collaboration with Arunachal Pradesh Women’s Welfare Society (APWWS), West Siang unit today conducted a day-long Legal Awareness Programme here at Gumin Kiin.
The programme was part of APSCW’s three-day tour to West Siang district which will cover Aalo, Kamba and Bagra Circles to create legal awareness among women. APSCW Chairperson Radhilu Chai Techi while stating that the Commission is pursuing efforts in disseminating awareness on women’s rights, responsibilities, empowerment and privileges, stressed on amendment and codification of certain customary laws where women rights are not protected. Speaking to the GBs attending the programme in large numbers she stressed on maintaining gender equality in delivering judgements at village level Keba. A time has come to shun the costly and unaffordable marriage system that ultimately leads to domestic violence and abandoning of traditional culture, she opined.
The APSCW Chairperson further disclosed that the Commission has made far-reaching recommendations to the government pertaining to the demand of a ultra-high facility maternity hospital for pregnant women, appointment of Independent Protection Officer with fund allocation, 33% reservation of women in government jobs, free and compulsory education of girls up to graduation, establishment of fast-track courts to settle cases of crime against women, charge sheeting of cases of violence against women by Inquiry Officer (IO ) and  inclusion of the provision of not transferring the IO mid-way during trial period. Compulsory marriage registration for women, prompt action against government officials in polygamy cases under CCS Rules, change and codifying customary practices that are not in the interest of women and Section 22 of the APSCW Act are the other recommendations, she added. 
West Deputy Commissioner Moki Loyi lauded the sustained efforts of the Commission in spreading awareness on women rights related issues. President, APWWS West Siang unit Marbom Riba Bagra expressed gratitude to the Commission for conducting the awareness programmes in the district.
Various member of the Commission spoke at length on pressing women rights issues such as gender equity, crime against women, polygamy and domestic violence, skill development and vocational training etc. DIPRO
