ITANAGAR, Sep 24: The Arunachal Pradesh College Teachers’ Association (APCTA) today called on the Education Minister Taba Tedir and submitted a representation seeking redressal of its many points.
The APCTA has sought immediate revocation of suspension of Narendra Pramanik, Associate Professor & Head, Department of Chemistry, DNGC, Itanagar, refraining from engaging College Teachers as Exam Functionaries for exams conducted by any Board or Commission or Government Department and to abstain from engaging College Teachers for any extra duties on Saturdays and Sundays as Saturdays.
The APCTA said that Government College teachers across the State shall cooperate and perform any APSSB assigned duties till the suspension of N. Pramanik is revoked. They made it clear that performing duties for exams conducted by the Boards/Commissions/Government Departments doesn’t come under the Charter of Duties of a teacher. Thus, performing such duties shouldn’t be mandatory rather it should be a voluntary one.
Moreover, engaging College teachers to perform extra duties on Saturdays and Sundays compromises with the quality of teaching and research works as these two days are not exactly holidays for the teachers but meant for better preparation for their classes and to undertake research works since these are mandatory requirements for promotion of a teacher as per the UGC Regulations. In fact, assigning extra duties other than academic on Saturdays and Sundays and without seeking prior consent is an infringement upon the fundamental rights of a teacher. Hence, APCTA strongly objects to and appeals the state government to direct the APSSB not to obligate the College teachers to do their exam duties.
The APCTA said that the Minister has positively agreed to fulfill the demands made by the Association. He assured to revoke the suspension of N. Pramanik as soon as possible. Besides, Tedir said that he could understand the heavy workload of College teachers with the introduction of Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) under new National Education Policy 2020. He has also agreed to look into the issue of mandatory engagement of College teachers on Saturdays and Sundays by the APSSB.
