ITANAGAR, Aug 18: Taking cognisance of the recent harassment of three women travelling from Itanagar by the cab driver of a local tour agency, Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) stated that it is disheartening to read news of increasing misconduct and violence against women every day. “Women safety and challenges in a wide spectrum of transport have become a greater issue. The State Government must intervene to improve women’s safety in public road transport. Unsafe transport causes ‘opportunity deprivation’ to women in all fields and also creates an environment which curtails freedom and rights of women folk,” a statement issued by the APCC said.
APCC also demanded that the state government initiate ‘public road transport safety measures’ for women immediately which is free from threat, assault and misconduct and also frame strict rules and regulations for the public and private transport operators without compromising security and safety of passengers in general and women in particular.
