LONGDING, Apr 16: A team of officials from the State Anti-Narcotics Bureau in a two-day operation has destroyed around 963 acres of poppy fields in Longphong, Mintong and Longding and Pongchau Circles of Longding district.
State Nodal Officer-cum-First Class Special Executive Magistrate Oli Koyu led the drive conducted on April 14 and 15. The team was assisted by EAC Dakli Gara, DSP Longding B Tangjang, DSP Kanubari K. Komrang, CO Longding Taya Yullu, CO Pongchau Nyarik Diyum and other officials. On the same day the SHGs of Wakka Circle also destroyed poppy fields as a mark of solidarity with the Anti-Narcotics Bureau and the District Administration. “Production and possession of poppy straws and fruits of commercial quantity of 50 kg and above in cultivation areas or warehouses is punishable with 10-20 years imprisonment u/s 15/8 of the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substance Act 1985,” Koyu informed.
The drive was in tune with the SLMCC action plan drawn during the NCORD meeting on October 26 last year wherein Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar suggested providing meaningful alternative livelihood opportunities to the opium cultivators in order to discourage them from the illegal practice. Appreciating the cooperation of the officials of the DA and police, Koyu informed that but for some technical and logistics issues, they could have covered more areas, adding that the destruction drive was peaceful and did not face any resistance.
Longding being strategically located along the international border of Myanmar as well as states like Nagaland and with high and rampant drug abuse, such drives are needed, an official said. DIPRO
