ITANAGAR, Nov 6: A massive anti-corruption rally and dharna swept through IG Park, Itanagar on Thursday, as hundreds joined hands under the banner of the Jan Andolan Anti-Corruption Movement of Arunachal Pradesh (JAAMAP) and India Against Corruption (Arunachal Unit), demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Pema Khandu and a CBI/SIT monitored investigation into alleged corruption involving the Chief Minister, his family, and close associates.
The protest echoed with slogans calling for transparency, justice, and accountability from the state leadership. Carrying banners and placards, protesters accused the government of institutionalizing corruption and demanded that the Chief Minister step down to allow a free and fair probe.
Addressing the media, JAAMAP Organizing Chairman Nabam Tagam said the people of Arunachal Pradesh have risen to demand an end to “family-centered corruption and misuse of public money.” He asserted that the rampant misuse of funds under various schemes, including the Sampoorna Grameen Rozgar Yojana (SGRY), Hydro Power Projects, Special Development Fund (SDF), and National Disaster Relief Fund (NDRF), has caused losses running into tens of thousands of crores, allegedly benefiting a few at the cost of public welfare.
Tagam also called for a reinvestigation into late Kalikho Pul’s “Mere Vichar” note, saying that vital corruption revelations made by the former Chief Minister were never properly probed. “The people have lost faith in the system. It is time for the truth to come out through an independent investigation,” he stated.
He also refuted allegation of politically motivated protest in view of the upcoming Panchayat or Municipal Election. Tagam stated “we have nothing to do with the upcoming elections in the state, but our only motive is a free and fair CBI inquiry against the incumbent CM for his alleged involvement in corruption.”
The rally that started from Akashdeep concluded at the Tennis court. The organisers announced plans to carry the protest to New Delhi, appealing to the Central Government and national investigative agencies to take immediate cognisance of the allegations and ensure a corruption-free Arunachal Pradesh.
