ZIRO, May 7: A meeting to chalk out the modalities for making the ongoing Arunachal Airgun Surrender Abhiyaan (AASA) successfully in Lower Subansiri district was convened today here at the DC’s Conference Hall, chaired by Deputy Commissioner Somcha Lowang.
While stressing on unified efforts for making AASA successful in the district, the DC said that HoDs owning airguns should lead the drive by surrendering which would act as a motivation for others. The efforts towards conservation of wildlife is commendable and should be endorsed by all individuals, she said, assuring full assistance from District Administration’s end and imposition of blanket ban on sale of airgun pellets in Lower Subansiri. She further directed the DFO to conduct regular raids in local markets to prevent sale of wildlife meat and book the erring sellers under provisions of Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. She also called for active involvement of PRI members in the initiative.
DFO Abhinav Kumar informed that besides the 75 airguns that have been surrendered so far in Kamle and Lower Subansiri districts, each ZPM has been requested to ensure at least 10 surrenders from their respective segment. DMO Dr Tage Kanno, who is also actively involved in wildlife conservation activities in the district and District Agriculture Officer Tasso Butung emphasized on the need for intensified IEC activities and active participation by HoDs for making the drive successful. RFO Talo Dibo made a PowerPoint Presentation on AASA. SP Harsh Indora also attended the meeting.
Since March 17 last when the Airgun Surrender Abhiyaan was launched by Environment and Forest Minister Mama Natung, under Hapoli Forest Division which includes Kamle and Lower Subansiri districts, 75 airguns have been surrendered so far- 67 from Yachuli AC, 4 from Ziro AC and 4 from Kamle. DIPRO
