ITANAGAR, Aug 20: All Arunachal Pradesh Students Union has strongly opposed the draft proposal of “Arunachal Pradesh Marriage & Inheritance of Properties Bill -2021” terming it as contentious and controversial that will open the floodgates in near future.
The said draft proposal was in discussion since July last, and a meeting was held under Arunachal Pradesh State Commission for Women (APSCW) where AAPSU attended and since then the union has opposed Clause- 39 of the said Bill, said the union’s General Secretary Tobom Dai. “Clause- 39 of the said Bill is outrageously degrading to the sole mission of AAPSU to protect the rights of the indigenous people,” he said.
Dai clarified that opposing the draft proposal doesn’t mean that APPSU is against women of Arunachal Pradesh adding that ‘gender equality is far better in our tribal society than other parts of the country.’
President AAPSU, Hawa Bagang urged the state government to immediately publish the draft of offspring of Non-APST men married to APST women. The meeting on the offspring issue was held many times under the chairmanship of Minister Social Justice Empowerment & Tribal Affairs, Alo Libang, so it's high time to publicize the draft as soon as possible, he said.
“We have no objection if there is a law for the upliftment of APST women but we are totally against any bill which gives inheritance rights to APST women-married to Non-APST,” Bagang said.
