ITANAGAR, Jul 3: The All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) has said that deportation of Chakmas and Hajongs has been a prime demand of the people of Arunachal Pradesh and the union since its inception has been fighting for the cause.
In a press brief today, AAPSU General Secretary Tobom Dai raised the demand for the formation of a high-level committee to ascertain the current population of the Chakmas and Hajongs settled in the state from 1962-1964.  The recent incident of violence and intimidation in Kathan by the Chakmas was not the only one and the state’s people have been facing them for many decades and a proper step by the state government should be initiated to bring back the Chakma settlers to their respective allotted areas, the AAPSU GS said. “The individuals and the human rights organisations supporting the Chakmas and Hajongs should be aware of the problems faced by the state's people. Sitting in the capital city of the country and making statements on behalf of them is not appreciable in any way,” he added. “They are immigrants and should be treated accordingly by the state government and it should also  be ensured that not a single area of the state is encroached by the Chakmas and Hajongs,” the union’s GS said. On Thursday, a meeting chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein discussed the issue of land encroachment by the Chakma immigrants in Kathan under Lohit district.  “We hope, under the chairmanship of the DCM, the issue will be solved at the earliest,” Dai added.
Meanwhile, the President of All Mishmi Students’ Union (AMSU) Assendo Mitti  while appreciating the state government for constituting a committee to demark the inter-district boundary of Changlang and Lohit, has appealed for measures to check the Chakma settlers in Kathan. Due to lack of a clear demarcation of the inter-district boundary, there are problems in executing administrative actions against the Chakma immigrants, he added, alleging that they are taking undue advantage of the poor inter-district boundary demarcation. “Many times they come inside Lohit district and settle as they wish,” the AMSU President observed, adding that they do this because they claim they are being permitted by the Changlang District Administration, which till now hasn’t been substantiated through documentary evidence.
“Now that the state government has constituted a committee to look into the matter, we hope the issue will be resolved and accordingly all the Chakmas will be made to resettle on their allotted lands by the state government,” he said.
