ITANAGAR, Apr 29:The All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) today pointed to the sorry state of several schools in various districts of the state, which included capital complex, Lohit, Namsai, Tezu and West Siang.
A press note from the apex students’ body this evening informed that during its week-long educational tour to assess the problems faced by government schools, the AAPSU found that many schools are functioning under miserable conditions and struggling with poor facilities.
“School infrastructure including mid day meal kitchen, office building, all weather classrooms, sanitation and drinking water facilities are missing. Some schools even have shared classrooms for lower sections due to unavailability of classrooms. Some classrooms have to be shifted during rainy season because the roof leaks”, AAPSU Vice President (Protocol) Dr Tayuk Sonam informed.
Students don’t have books to read and there is no washroom facility for girl child and here we talk about ‘Beti bachao Beti padhao’, Dr Sonam lamented.
“We have 5697 government schools in our state, out of which 3318 schools are under state education department and 2379 schools are under Sarva Shiksha Abiyan (SSA). Almost all the schools are in similar conditions. Forget about the conditions of government schools at interior places, the conditions in the state capital itself is a huge example. That means a school is getting only above 17 lakhs. Inspite of all this problems, in recent budget proposal for 2018-19, the state government has allocated only Rs 100 crore for maintenance of schools, colleges including furniture etc. under Chief Minister’s Samast Shiksha Yojana whereas huge amount of funds are being sanctioned for unnecessary schemes”, the AAPSU stated.
In this matter, the AAPSU has appealed the state government for school maintenance and supply of textbooks before the opening of new academic session.
Alleging that the government initiated smart classroom program is the most unsuccessful scheme ever without proper electricity and wi-fi facility, the students’ body suggested that the 35 Crore fund sanctioned against it should be used for school maintenance instead.
The AAPSU has also suggested that the state government should install bio-metric system for employee attendance in all the government educational institutes to check and control irregularity of teaching and non teaching staffers in schools and to ensure that no teacher is teaching on behalf of someone else.
The AAPSU team was led by its Vice President Protocol, Dr. Tayuk Sonam along with Prem Tallang Comdir, Secretary Education, Tadar Takaiang, Spoke person, Marli Kamki, secretary Debate & Symposium and Lokam Tachok, Secretary Social Service.
