ITANAGAR, Jan 28: The All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) today organized a sit-in here at the IG Park to protest against China’s encroachment of Indian territory in Upper Subansiri district which was flashed on the national media recently.
Many of the federation units of AAPSU joined the protest condemning the nefarious activities of China by holding banners and placards and lambasting the Chinese as well as the Central government for keeping silent.
Speaking to the media persons, AAPSU President Hawa Bagang blamed the Centre for its failure in protecting the state from foreign incursion. “AAPSU as an apex student organization is ready to fight with the Chinese military if the Central government gives such permission because it seems the government is incapable of protecting Arunachal Pradesh from foreign incursion,” he said. “Since past decades, the Chinese have been disturbing the people of the state by illegal activities along the Tibet border which is silently affecting their psychological health,” Bagang alleged. Urging the state’s MPs to be the ‘voice’ of the state’s people by raising the issue more vociferously in the upcoming parliament session, the AAPSU President appealed to the Central government to bring improvement to roads and telecommunication connectivity in border areas, early release of development package and increase the strength of military forces in the state’s strategic locations.
AAPSU General Secretary Tobom Dai said the symbolic protest is a message to the Centre that the indigenous people of the state reject the repeated claims of the Chinese that Arunachal Pradesh is their land. “Also, the sit-in is an expression of our frustration against the hard-hearted approach of the central government towards the emerging news that the Chinese had developed a modern village within the state’s territory,” he said. “The Central government should be ashamed for not voicing strongly,” Dai remarked while seeking a firmer stand both from the Centre and the State over the issue. The Chinese claim of Arunachal Pradesh is an old issue and whether it is the Congress or the BJP, a hard-hearted attitude continues to remain, he rued.
Meanwhile, Coordinator of the North East Students’ Organization (NESO) Pritam Bhai Sonam while reminding that the issue is of national interest has urged the ruling government for collective measures and refrain from playing the blame game. “It would have been a different scenario if the Chinese incursion was in Ladakh or Kashmir rather than Arunachal Pradesh as we can see the silence of many political leaders and mainstream media,” Sonam observed.
“Do not compel us to prove again and again that the people of Arunachal Pradesh are Indians,” the NESO Coordinator added.
