LONGDING, Apr 13: In a major triumph against militancy in the TCL region, eight cadres of the NSCN (K) and NSCN (IM) today surrendered before the Superintendent of Police, Longding voluntarily.
Concerted efforts, relentless pursuit and a humane approach by Longding Police and Assam Rifles to convince the insurgents to come overground and join the mainstream has paid rich dividends, a press communiqué from the Longding Police said.
The surrendered cadres are- SS Lance Corporal Nyaipho Gangsa (33) of NSCN-KYA (joined in 2008), SS PVT Bowgang Gangsa (38) of NSCN-KYA (joined in 2014), SS Sergeant Wangkiak Wangsa (25 ) of NSCN-KYA (joined in 2013), SS Sergeant Khuapoh Wangpan (27 ) of NSCN-R (joined in 2012), SS Corporal Nokthat Wangpan of NSCN-R (joined in 2015), SS PVT Alem Wangpan (30) of NSCN-KYA (joined in 2012), SS Pvt Wangjep Wangsu (27) of NSCN-R (joined on 2015) and SS PVT Banthak Wangpan (32) of NSCN-KYA (joined in 2008).
The surrendered cadres who were engaged in extortion activities and collection of ‘taxes’ were holding influential positions and had been the active operatives for their respective outfits. Earlier, various important insurgent leaders had shunned their outlawed groups and joined the mainstream, giving a blow to militancy in the troubled belt in the state. This is yet another success for the security forces who are persistently making efforts to bring peace and tranquility in the region by convincing the underground elements to give up arms and return to the course of normal civilian life.
The surrender ceremony was held at the DC’s office and the militants voluntarily surrendered before Deputy Commissioner-cum District Magistrate, Longding Bani Lego and SP Vikram Harimohan Meena.
Surrender certificates were handed over to them on the occasion. Welcoming the surrendered cadres to the mainstream, the DC, however, cautioned them from going back to the path of violence and urged them to set examples for the people of their native places and encourage friends and others not to join insurgency. Opportunities for skill development would also be extended to them soon for earning livelihoods, the DC assured.
Meanwhile, the surrendered cadres have revealed how hard their lives were in the outfits they served. Most significantly, they have appealed to their fellow cadres who are still active in NSCN-IM and the factions namely KYA, R, U and KK to give up the path of violence and start anew by surrendering before the police and administration.
