PASIGHAT, Nov 20: The 2nd edition of the 2-day Butterfly & Biodiversity Meet from November 18-19 organized by State Foundation for Biodiversity Conservation (SFBC) concluded here on Sunday with sighting of 130 species of butterflies.

The team of SFBC, lovers of Mother Nature and butterflies which includes professionals of such as doctors, engineers, wildlife scientists, university professors, amateur photographers and enthusiasts were flagged off to D. Ering Wildlife Sanctuary from Mebo Forest Range by Divisional Forest Officer, Pasighat Forest Division, Tabang Jamoh on November 18 last.

In their trip to the sanctuary, total of 33 species of medicinal plants were reported and recorded by Dr. Dekbin Yongam, Research Officer, SFRI Itanagar (Department of Environment and Forest) who also actively participated in the meet other than the general flora, informed SFBC Convener, Dr. Joram Khopey. Out of 33 species, 6 species of them are globally significant medicinal plants like Piper Pedicellatum, Gynocordia Odorata, Tinospora cordifolia etc, added Dr. Khopey. Ambassador of the meet, Chum Darang also attended the meet on the first day.

On Sunday, the team tracked and toiled the foothill of old village location of Runne village, near Pasighat where most of the butterfly species were sighted.

With sighting and short-listing of so many butterfly species which is perhaps the first time in the state will help the forest department of the district and state and researchers to work upon conserving this beautiful creatures. The record/list of species will be prepared as baseline information and shall be documented properly, added Dr. Khopey who showed immense pleasure over success of the meet.

The State Foundation for Biodiversity Conservation team were elated at the response and hospitality offered to the participants who decided to stay in Home-stays only.

The participants of the meet and SFBC team also extended thanks to the villagers of Runne village especially, Talut Siram for extending the hospitality.

Among others, members from NGOs, East Siang Home-stay & Tourism Association besides personalities like Nawang G. Bhutia from BAMOS Nature Conservation Society, Sikkim (Limca Book of record holder),  Dr. Kaling Dai, Dy. Director Health Services, Tajum Yomcha, Research Officer from Namdapha NP, Rajeev Rudra, Dipanjali Biswas, Minom Pertin, Rokom Tayeng, Debasish Gogoi and Roshan Upadhyay etc. attended the meet with much enthusiasm.
