ITANAGAR, Dec 9: The dawn-to-dusk bandh call given by three organisations — Arunachal Pradesh Indigenous Youth Organization (APIYO), All Naharlagun Youth Organization (ANYO) and Indigenous Youth Force of Arunachal (IYFA)  — brought normal life to a grinding halt across the Itanagar Capital Region on Tuesday. Markets remained shut, commercial transport stayed off the roads, and public movement was visibly thin as the bandh crippled daily activities.
The protesters prime demands include demolition of the Capital Jama Masjid at Nigam Colony; a ban on weekly markets in the capital region; and deportation of alleged illegal immigrants.
DIGP (Capital Region) Tumme Amo informed that at least 31 violators were detained as per the order of the District Magistrate to prevent any untoward incident. Security personnel were deployed across sensitive locations to prevent any untoward incident.
“No major law-and-order situation has been reported from any part of the Capital Region, except a few stray incidents of tyre burning in the early hours,” the DIGP stated.
Speaking to the media, APIYO President Taro Liyak Sonam said the bandh was completely peaceful, asserting that the organisations had “no intention to harm the public or take the law into our own hands.” He alleged that the state government has repeatedly ignored their demands, forcing them to intensify their agitation.
He further warned that the groups may continue their movement if the government fails to respond on illegal immigrants ,illegal Bangladeshi and illegal Masjid issue. He also demanded the immediate release of all detained members immediately before tensions escalate further.
Sonam also expressed gratitude to the public for supporting the bandh.
