Don Bosco Youth Centre had successfully placed all its students who had just finished its course. A few days earlier, a campus recruitment drive was conducted at IGGC, Tezu with corporate participation to pick final semester students of general streams. Governor of the state had also constituted Placement Review Committee to study, deliberate and suggest ways and means to improve the institutional ranking prospects and opportunities for the students for job placement of the state’s universities and educational institutions. All these are welcome signs and suggest that placements and campus recruitments are gradually getting importance in Arunachal Pradesh.

Placements and campus recruitments have become so vital and an intrinsic aspect of the current educational structure that before trying for admission in any college or institute, their past placement records are carefully examined besides its academic reputation. The institutes while placing advertisements in print, electronic as well as online media also essentially clarifies this factor in eye-catching fonts to attract attention. That I will land with a job after final semester induces a feeling of security among the student taking a course and also makes the study tension-free and enjoyable.

And keeping in tune with necessities of time, more and more colleges, institutes and universities are adding dedicated placement cells. It is quite natural that in any educational institution students will come from all walks of lives and whatever may be their background, urban or rural, they are essentially greenhorns knowing nothing about the ‘warfare’ in garnering jobs in today’s extremely competitive world. Some may prima facie appear smart but still suffers from self- confidence to face the volley of questions from interview board. Again, one with a sound technical degree is not equipped to face group discussion rounds due to lack of power of communication, a feature not uncommon among many technical pass outs. These problems are more common today than one can imagine, making the idea of introducing placement cells all so important.

It is true that many corporates offer huge salaries, but only to the fittest. And for making oneself ‘fittest’ it is necessary to learn the essential aspects which begin right from preparing an ideal resume to facing the interview. But generally, as they do not form a part of normal curriculum, an active placement cell can come to the rescue by simultaneously imparting these skills during the course itself, be it a technical, professional or general. Their roles are just not restricted to inviting the corporates in campuses, but arming students to face them successfully.

Placement cells & campus recruitments are pressing needs of the state’s student community today which can’t be overlooked and for meeting their aspirations they should be given greater priorities.
